Michael MacLaren

Having joined the BGV Club Committee in 2018 I had the honour of becoming Chairman after the 2021 AGM. I do try to attend as many club events as I can but is still unlikely that I will get the opportunity to meet the majority of members. Myself and the Committee appreciate everyone who supports the club, and the breeds that are so special to us, by joining or continuing their membership. For those who show, and attend other club events, please come and speak to me if you have any club issues you would like to discuss. The contact details for all of the Committee members are available here on the website so please feel free to get in touch with any of us.

Growing up in highland Perthshire we always had gundogs and working terriers and I still contentedly live in the same area. After nearly ten years in the motor trade I changed career and joined the Scottish Ambulance Service. I have now been on frontline emergency duties for over twenty-five years and my current role is as an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner on a response vehicle.

With my wife Fiona, I have owned and exhibited GBGV’s since 2001 when we also became members of the club. We bred our first litter in 2004 under our newly acquired Tarmachan affix.  Amongst our many successes to date we have won both BOB at Crufts and Best In Show at BGV Club Championship Show three times as well as breeding the dog and bitch CC record holders and in 2021 we amazingly won our 100th CC. We have also bred and owned multiple champions around the world, including International Champions as well as various World and European titles. Personally I have been fortunate enough to handle one of our dogs to Best of Breed at Crufts, Best in Show at the BGV Club Championship Show and to a World Winner title. We currently have nine GBGV’s living in the house with us, ranging up to fifteen years old, and they are all our pets who just happen to go to shows.

Eager to learn about the breeds I have participated and assisted at numerous breed seminars over the years and was recently the GBGV speaker the clubs second Breed Appreciation Day. Throughout my time involved in the breeds I have visited many of the UK and European BGV breeders particularly when they have had litters. The National d’Elevage breed speciality show and BGV hunting trials in France have also provided a valuable insight into the breeds on my numerous visits.

My other interests include occasionally losing golf balls with friends and, even less frequently these days, going fishing. I have a small(ish) collection of vintage tractors and motorcycles which I use for work, fun and charity events.     07771 516671
