The Health of the Breed
With all living beings, whether human or canine, health issues and illnesses can occur. We are fortunate in that Grands and Petits have a common origin from long established, rustic stock, bred for work. Therefore overall they are healthy hounds with few breed-prone problems. However, this is not to say that they do not exist. Over the years, the BGV Club has become aware of various health problems in the breed and therefore impresses on breeders only to breed from stock that, at the time of mating, they sincerely believe to be sound, healthy and of good temperament. In the next few pages you will find a few of the known problems with details of what the Club does to help you, the owner, in the unlikely event that your BGV should become ill. For help or advice, please contact any member of the BGV Health Committee.
